Why Bai Tu Long?

The same seascape as Ha Long Bay — and room to breathe

Bai Tu Long Bay is the north-eastern half of the great karst seascape of Quang Ninh: hundreds of jungle-topped limestone towers rising from green water, just beyond the edge of Ha Long Bay. The scenery is every bit as dramatic. The difference is that most of the boats stay behind.

Here you kayak lagoons with fishermen rather than fifty other kayaks, row through the floating village of Vung Vieng, climb into Thien Canh Son cave and anchor for the night with barely a light on the horizon. This guide helps you choose the right cruise, get there from Hanoi, time it around the weather and add the beaches of Quan Lan and Co To.

Cruise boats anchored among limestone karsts at sunset Overnight cruise from €118
🕒 2 days, 1 night 📍 From Hanoi ⭐ 4.7 (1,634)

From Hanoi: 2-Day Ha Long Bay & Bai Tu Long Bay Cruise

The most-booked overnight cruise that actually leaves the crowded Ha Long loop. You board at the international cruise port in Ha Long, sail east into Bai Tu Long, kayak and swim in the afternoon, eat a set dinner on board and wake up to karsts with almost nobody else around.

  • Quieter route into Bai Tu Long with fewer boats
  • Kayaking, swimming and a hidden cave
  • Round-trip transfer from Hanoi’s Old Quarter

Hanoi/Ninh Binh: 2-Day Ha Long & Bai Tu Long Bay 5-Star Cruise

A small, well-run five-star boat that spends its time in Bai Tu Long rather than queuing at Ha Long’s famous stops. Cabins are comfortable, the food is a clear step up from mid-range boats and the 4.9 rating over hundreds of reviews is remarkably consistent.

  • Small five-star boat, well-reviewed cabins
  • Caves, kayaking and a sunset on deck
  • Pickup from Hanoi or Ninh Binh

Bai Tu Long Bay: Day Cruise to the Untouched Side of the Bay

If you are already staying in Ha Long, this is the best half day you can spend on the water. It heads east away from the main channels into Bai Tu Long; most departures stop at a floating fishing village such as Vung Vieng (check the day’s itinerary on the booking page) and you are back by mid-afternoon.

  • Off-the-beaten-track route through Bai Tu Long
  • A floating fishing village and quiet lagoons
  • Lunch on board

🕒 3 days, 2 nights 📍 From Hanoi ⭐ 4.6 (151)

Hanoi: 3-Day Cruise Stay in Ha Long and Bai Tu Long Bay

The version to book if you can give the bay a proper amount of time. The middle day is spent entirely on the water — usually a day boat to the far side of Bai Tu Long for kayaking and a beach — while the day-trippers are still on the expressway.

  • Two nights on board, deep in Bai Tu Long
  • More kayaking, caves and a beach day
  • Unhurried pace with a full middle day
Stalactites lit up inside the vast chambers of Sung Sot cave Day trip from €34
🕒 1 day (about 12 hours) 📍 From Hanoi ⭐ 4.8 (14,052)

Hanoi: Ha Long Bay Day Cruise with Swimming, Lunch & Kayaking

The classic Ha Long Bay day from Hanoi, and one of the most-reviewed tours in Vietnam. It covers the famous stops — Sung Sot cave, Luon cave and Ti Top island — with lunch on board and expressway transfers. Busy, but efficient and excellent value.

  • Sung Sot (Surprise) cave
  • Kayak or bamboo boat at Luon cave
  • Swim and climb at Ti Top island
Green karst islands and calm water seen from a boat in Lan Ha Bay Luxury overnight cruise from €98
🕒 2 days, 1 night 📍 From Hanoi ⭐ 4.7 (4,980)

Hanoi: 2-Day Lan Ha & Ha Long Bay 5-Star Cruise with Balcony

Not Bai Tu Long — this one heads south-west into Lan Ha Bay, the other quiet alternative to Ha Long. We include it because it is one of the best-reviewed five-star cruises in the region and remarkably good value for balcony cabins.

  • Private balcony and bathtub in every cabin
  • Kayaking and swimming in Lan Ha Bay
  • Cooking class and sunset party

Where to go

The bay, the islands and the famous neighbour

Floating villages and caves in Bai Tu Long, white-sand islands beyond it, and Ha Long Bay’s great sights on the way in.

A tall limestone pillar and karst islands on calm water in Bai Tu Long Bay Bai Tu Long Bay

Bai Tu Long Bay

Ha Long’s quieter sister

The same drowned limestone landscape as Ha Long Bay, continuing north-east towards Van Don — but with a fraction of the boats. Hundreds of jungle-topped karsts, fishing villages, hidden caves and a national park, seen from the deck of an overnight cruise.

Vung Vieng Fishing Village

Life on the water

A floating fishing village tucked into a sheltered lagoon of Bai Tu Long, where houses, fish pens and pearl rafts ride on barrels beneath the karsts. Most visitors arrive by cruise and explore by rowing boat, paddled by a villager, or by kayak.

Thien Canh Son Cave

The big cave of Bai Tu Long

Usually described as the largest cave on the Bai Tu Long cruise route: a steep staircase up a karst island leads into a high chamber of stalactites, with views back over the bay from the entrance. The signature stop of most overnight cruises here.

A wide sandy beach on Quan Lan island with karst islands on the horizon The outer islands

Quan Lan Island

Beaches and an old trading port

The best-known inhabited island of the Van Don archipelago: long white-sand beaches such as Minh Chau, pine forest, a historic communal house and a slow village pace. Reached by ferry or speedboat from Van Don, it is where Vietnamese families go for a beach break.

Turquoise water and a long pine-backed beach at Hong Van on Co To island The outer islands

Co To Island

The far end of the bay

An island district out in the Gulf of Tonkin beyond the karsts, with clear water, rocky headlands and some of the finest beaches in the north. It takes a speedboat from Van Don to get there, which keeps it quiet outside Vietnamese summer holidays.

Ha Long Bay

The famous neighbour

The UNESCO World Heritage bay that made this coastline famous: some 1,600 limestone islands, caves and lagoons off Ha Long city. Busier than Bai Tu Long, but its big caves and viewpoints are spectacular — and most Bai Tu Long cruises start here.

Visiting Bai Tu Long Bay: your questions answered

Frequently asked questions

Is Bai Tu Long Bay worth it instead of Ha Long Bay?

For most people, yes. The limestone scenery is the same; what you gain is peace — far fewer boats, quieter anchorages and kayaking without a traffic jam. You give up some of Ha Long’s headline caves, which many cruises visit on the way anyway. See our full comparison.

How do you get from Hanoi to Bai Tu Long Bay?

By road to Ha Long, where most cruises board — about 2.5 to 3 hours on the expressway. Nearly every cruise includes a shuttle from Hanoi’s Old Quarter. See our Hanoi to Bai Tu Long guide for every option.

Should I do a day trip or an overnight cruise?

Overnight, if you possibly can. A day trip from Hanoi spends around five hours on the road for four or five on the water; one night on board gives you sunset, sunrise and the quiet hours when the bay is at its best.

Do I need to book Bai Tu Long cruises in advance?

The best small boats fill up a few weeks ahead in October–November and around Vietnamese holidays. Most cruises on GetYourGuide offer free cancellation, so there is little risk in booking early.

What about typhoons?

Typhoon season runs roughly July to October. When a storm threatens, the port authority suspends sailings and cruises are cancelled or rescheduled. Book with free cancellation and keep a spare day. More on the weather.
