Sheer limestone cliffs rising from the water in Bai Tu Long Bay

Thien Canh Son Cave

The big cave of Bai Tu Long

Thien Canh Son — roughly “heavenly mountain scenery” — is the cave most Bai Tu Long cruises build their itinerary around. From the landing stage, a steep staircase climbs the side of a karst island to the entrance, and inside a high, dry chamber is hung with stalactites and flowstone.

It is smaller and far less developed than Ha Long’s Sung Sot cave, which is exactly its appeal: there are no queues of day-trip groups, and you may well have it to yourself. The view from the cave mouth back over the bay is one of the best on the route.

Top things to do at Thien Canh Son Cave

Explore the chamber

Allow 30–45 minutes. The floor can be uneven and a little damp; your guide will point out the formations locals have named after animals and figures.

Pause at the entrance

The ledge at the top of the steps looks out over the lagoon and the karsts beyond — the best photo stop of the visit.

Combine with a beach or kayak

Cruises often pair the cave with a swim at a nearby beach or a kayak through the surrounding lagoons.

How to get to Thien Canh Son Cave

  • By cruise: Thien Canh Son is visited on Bai Tu Long overnight cruises, typically on the morning of day two. Several of the best Bai Tu Long tours list it by name.

Insider tips

  • Wear shoes with grip — the steps and cave floor can be slippery after rain.
  • The climb is short but steep; take it slowly in the summer heat and carry water.
  • A small torch or phone light helps in the darker corners.

Thien Canh Son Cave FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Is Thien Canh Son cave hard to climb?

It is a steep flight of steps rather than a hike. Anyone reasonably mobile can manage it at their own pace.

Is it bigger than Sung Sot cave?

No. Sung Sot in Ha Long Bay is larger and more dramatically lit. Thien Canh Son is quieter and more natural.

Can I visit without a cruise?

Not practically — it is only reachable by boat, and the cruises that stop there include it in the price.
