Quan Lan Island

Beaches and an old trading port

Quan Lan (Quan Lạn) is the largest-known inhabited island of the Van Don archipelago on the outer edge of Bai Tu Long. It is a long, narrow island of white-sand beaches, casuarina and pine woods, sand dunes and a small village of stone and wooden houses, and it has been a Vietnamese domestic beach favourite for years.

The island has deep history: it lay on the approaches to the medieval Van Don trading port, and the local festival re-enacts the naval victory of general Tran Khanh Du over the Mongol-Yuan supply fleet in 1288. The 18th-century Quan Lan communal house is one of the finest in the province.

Visit the communal house

The carved wooden Quan Lan communal house (đình Quan Lạn), with its old pillars and royal decrees, is a short walk from the village centre.

Eat the local seafood

Quan Lan is known for sá sùng (peanut worm, a prized local delicacy), crab and fresh fish. Eat at the village seafood restaurants in the evening.
