Sung Sot Cave

The “Surprise Cave”

Sung Sot — “Surprise Cave” — sits high on Bo Hon island in central Ha Long Bay and is the largest cave open to visitors in the bay. A staircase leads up to the entrance, and a walkway loops through a series of enormous chambers filled with stalactites, stalagmites and domed ceilings.

French explorers documented it in the early 20th century, and it has been the headline stop of Ha Long day trips for decades. It is busy, well lit and heavily visited — and still genuinely impressive.
